Clopay Building Products, the nation’s leading manufacturer of commercial and residential garage doors, has joined ABC's Emmy Award-winning program “Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” (EMHE) to donate its contemporary aluminum and glass garage doors to the Williams family of Pine Mountain, Ga..

The Clopay® Avante® Collection garage doors will be featured during the series season finale, which airs Sunday, May 16, 2010 at 8:00 p.m. ET on ABC.

Just three years after his son Jacob was born with Spina bifida, Jeremy Williams, a local high school football coach, was diagnosed with Lou Gehrig's disease, also known as ALS. Despite numerous surgeries and setbacks over the years, the Williams family continues to be an inspiration to their community.

“Clopay is honored to be able to help improve the lives of such an inspiring family,” says Pat Lohse, vice president of residential marketing. “We have partnered with our Clopay dealers to donate and install garage doors for several EMHE projects over the years and are happy that we were able to provide such a distinct and unique design element for the Williams’ home in 2010.

Clopay’s Avante Collection garage doors aren’t your typical solid steel raised panel variety. Instead, tempered glass is the primary design feature, which creates a striking contemporary appearance. There are many window options available to control the degree of natural light transmission and visibility including clear, opaque or mirrored glass, laminate and polycarbonate panels.

The glass is supported by a durable, 2 1/8-inch thick, rust-proof, commercial grade aluminum frame that can be anodized in bronze, clear or black, painted in white or brown, or custom-painted in a variety of durable powder coated finishes. Capped tongue and groove joints and a vinyl bottom weather seal helps keep out the elements.

Use of the Avante Collection isn’t limited to traditional garage door applications. In fact, glass panel garage doors like the Avante are becoming a popular modern alternative to French doors to seamlessly merge indoor and outdoor living spaces.

At the press of a button, the door is automatically raised, allowing traffic to flow during gatherings. Closed, it creates an attractive wall of windows, adding a panoramic view to any living space.

That feature is precisely what attracted EMHE designers to the Avante doors as they envisioned using them as a moving wall of windows between the family’s great room, outdoor patio and the new private therapy room built for the Williams’ son.

The oversized opening makes it possible for both Jacob and Jeremy to access these common living areas with ease. And mom is thrilled that she can now quietly observe her son’s therapy sessions from inside the house, sharing in the triumphs without distracting from the important work going on across the way.

In addition to these unique applications, the series designers utilized a third Clopay Avante Collection door on the home’s garage. The contemporary look fits right in with the home’s new rustic modern style, adding an interesting visual element to the front entrance.

“Extreme Makeover: Home Edition” brings together communities across the U.S. to renovate and build incredible homes for deserving families that have experienced setbacks. The show is dedicated to using environmentally-friendly building materials, techniques and technologies such as solar power in their renovations.

The Clopay Avante Collection doors were installed by Builder Specialties in cooperation with the EMHE building contractor, Nationwide Homes.
