Clopay Building Products showcased two of its garage doors – the glass and aluminum Clopay Avante™ Collection and the new Canyon Ridge® Collection on the Green Builder Media VISION House Series, which was unveiled during the International Builders Show in Orlando January 12-15.
The VISION House Series explores a gamut of affordable green building and sustainable living options to help building professionals understand what it means for the average American family to design, build, retrofit, and live in a green home.
The VISION House Orlando
The VISION House is a newly constructed “urban farmhouse” built around the essential principles of sustainable design and construction including energy efficiency, conservation, indoor air quality, and disaster resistance.
Designed to reflect the unique character of its traditional neighborhood, the home incorporates familiar architectural elements but with a modern twist. Architect Ed Binkley selected Clopay’s Avante Collection aluminum and glass garage doors to complement the home’s contemporary exterior.
“The Avante is the perfect choice to integrate the detached two car garage into the home’s total exterior presence,” says Pat Lohse, vice president of residential marketing for Clopay Building Products. “It complements major design elements like the galvanized metal gable roof and industrial steel mesh railings and sets the stage for the home’s interior open loft-like layout.”
The most striking feature of the Avante is its delicate yet durable glass design, which allows for natural light transmission and relative degrees of privacy. The glass is supported by a 2-1/8-inch thick, rust-proof commercial grade aluminum frame, perfect for a coastal environment.
The degree of light transmission and privacy is controlled based on the choice of glazing material, which includes clear, frosted, opaque or mirrored glass, laminate and polycarbonate panels.
The frame is available in clear bronze or black anodized finishes and white or black paint. It can also be custom-painted or supplied with a wood look Ultra-Grain® finish. Binkley specified a white frame with frosted tempered glass.
Binkley has a strong focus on an affordable, green systems approach to housing. He is a frequent speaker at symposiums, contributing editor to national publications and has been featured on a variety of HGTV and radio programs presenting his green building philosophies.
The ReVISION House Orlando
The ReVISION House is an elegant Napa-style high-performance retrofit. Built in the typical Florida block-style, the home incorporates advanced materials and design techniques to significantly enhance energy performance and resource efficiency, including Clopay’s Canyon Ridge® Collection.
Constructed from a durable, low-maintenance material that looks like real wood, the Canyon Ridge Collection offers a unique rustic appearance, design flexibility and customization in a composite polymer material that can be pre-finished in two color options or finished in the field. The material is UV resistant and impervious to moisture, so it won’t rot, split, shrink, separate, or crack. With a 19.2 R-value, it’s well insulated to improve comfort and energy efficiency.
“Designed for buyers who love the look of wood but not the upkeep, the Canyon Ridge Collection delivers the best of both worlds: the realism and design flexibility of wood with the low-maintenance and energy efficient benefits of insulated steel,” says Clopay’s Pat Lohse.
The builders opted for a clear Cyprus cladding with mahogany overlays pre-finished in a dark oak stain for the ranch style home’s front facing attached garage.
