A Boston Garage Gets Much Needed Charm

Oct 16, 2012

Is it possible to get excited about something as functional as garage doors? A Boston-area homeowner says yes.

Jon S. loves his colonial style home. What he didn't love was his detached concrete cinder block two-car garage. When one of the outdated wood garage doors stopped working, he and his family loved it even less. So he turned to A Concord Carpenter Rob Robillard for help.

To give the garage the historic charm and character the family wanted, Rob recommended installing cedar clapboards over the cinder block, replacing the existing wood garage doors with an architecturally appropriate style, and finishing it off with a fresh coat of paint.

The homeowners used Clopay’s Door Imagination System to find vintage style garage doors with all the modern conveniences.

Ultimately, they selected Coachman Collection carriage house doors, which look like wood but are actually constructed of insulated steel and composite. The Coachman is a popular alternative to a natural wood door because it’s durable and low-maintenance – it won't rot, warp or crack.

The doors were factory finished in white and painted after they were installed with an exterior latex paint.

A true craftsman, Rob commented that he was impressed with the level of detail that went into the construction of the doors. Details like the coped edging and the woodgrain textured composite overlays make it difficult to tell that they are actually steel.

More importantly, the homeowners are pleased with the results.

In a review Jon writes, "The Clopay doors marry a classic New England design with modern-day efficiency. They are the visual focal point of the new garage and instantly increased the curb appeal of our home. The online design tool made the door selection process so much easier because we could see the doors on our actual home. Even before the doors arrived, we were confident we had made a good choice."
